Alive Moment: Block Universe at Cork Street Galleries

Sophie Jung presents a major performance and installation at Cork Street Galleries as part of this year’s Block Universe festival.Founded by Louise O’Kelly in 2015, Block Universe is an annual platform for fostering and encouraging work in the live medium, run by an all-female team including O’Kelly, Katharina Worf, Tatjana Damm and Xica Aires. For The Bigger Sleep – rehush (hush), Jung has adapted her noteworthy Kunstmuseum Basel work into a site-specific event. Over a two-week residency, the festival’s full cycle, spoken word and sculpture draw out the fundamental ambiguity of language via gestures and found objects.

Born in Luxembourg and working from Basel and London, Jung’s practice “addresses representation and its pitfalls, both culturally as a system of disguised and shifting signs and personally as a way to track and record life.” Cork Street Galleries acts as a festival hub while premieres, talks, screenings and workshops punctuate the city, all part of the curated programme of emerging and established talent. Other highlights include the UK premiere of The View From Behind The Futuristic Rose Trellis, Ravioli Me Away’s opera at The Albany; Michael Portnoy’s unmasking at The Swiss Church (with an introduction by art historian Claire Bishop) and Alexandra Pirici’s ongoing action Leaking Territoriesat the Imperial War Museum.
